Lily’s Mum’s Fig Jam
What a way to elevate cheese on toast! We bought some of Lily Huseyin’s mum’s home made fig jam today. At $5.99 a tub it sure beats Maggie Beer’s smooth bland jellies. The jam is chunky and sticky with a handful of yummy fig soaked almond pieces. Lily’s tip is to nuke it for 20 seconds before use. You can buy the jam at Jim’s Fruit Barn at 308 Argyle Street in Moss Vale. Lily and her husband Halil have the freshest and cheapest selection of fresh fruit and veg that we have seen yet in the Highlands. We picked up two punnets of incredible blueberries at $1 a pop. They were considered seconds as there was one slightly squishy berry tainting the entire lot apparently. The menfolk in Lily’s family travel to the wholesale markets in Parramatta six days per week to source fresh stock. They leave at 2am every day except their precious ‘lie-in Thursday’, traveling at only 80km per hour in their old truck then spend half an hour on arrival hustling for a car park! Then they fill the truck and bring back their goodies especially for us. When figs are available, Lily and her mum add the jam to the store’s offering. The Huseyins are the unsung fruit and veg heroes of SoHi and we salute them.

Flea Market this Sunday

Gone are the days when we had hours to spare dragging our bed-headed caffeine starved partners from garage sale to deceased estate auction to car boot sale. But oh, how we love a rummage! The ingenious Julia has created an event for us time-poor treasure hunters that has had us in intense anticipation since we heard about it two months ago. This Sunday at Moss Vale showground is what might be the Highlands first, best and biggest communal garage sale ever. No more trawling the neighbourhood in search of a sweet little Martin Boyd jug or a black velvet painting from Tijuana. Dealers and private sellers come together with a mix of trash and treasure. Loads of sellers have already registered but late comers can still secure a stall by turning up at the showground before 830am on the day and paying at the gate. And here is the best and cleverest bit. Reviva are coming to collect everything that doesn’t sell after the markets finish. So run out to your garage and sort yourself out. You have about 48 hours. Forget eBay – we’re talking cold hard cash people! The market is from 9am to 3pm this Sunday. There will be egg and bacon rolls and barista-made coffee. A Sunday morning made in heaven!

Shot in the Dark at the Rex
We have just discovered The Rex at Bundanoon. The Rex is actually the memorial hall, but it doubles as an old style theatre. In 1994 volunteers took it upon themselves to start showing movies at the Rex after a decades long absence due to the advent of the Betamax. They used the original 1928 projector. The old projector has since died, but a 1948 projector was sourced to replace it. Old ads from the silent movie days are shown before the main feature, and the audience actually delights in projector-breakdowns. They feel it adds to the authenticity of the experience. It’s all very quaint and we’re very excited that the next Rex film is this Saturday night at 730pm. The feature is Peter Sellers’ A Shot in the Dark, thought to be the best sequel in the Pink Panther series.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for a whole family.

Claire Incorruptible
We have just discovered the most uber eBay store in the universe. This is a store selling not one, but TWO original seventies Diane Von Furstenberg playsuits. Choosing an image to post on SoHi was near impossible. Adelaide girl Belinda Humphris curates this most incredible ongoing exhibition of style. Her fit-model is captivating and the entire site, including the clothing images, has been art directed to the bejesus. Scanning the site credits we noticed that our favourite Adelaide design house, MASH, seem to have had more than a finger in this pie.
We’re really feeling it reading Belinda/Claire’s list of ♡s
Individual, Eclectic & Imaginative vintage, Designer Vintage Rarities, Bruce Weber, Norma Kamali, Sonia Rykiel, Ossie Clark & Celia Birtwell, Porcelain animal figures, Lea Stein, the collaboration of Charles Jourdan & Guy Bourdin, Tuxedo chocolates, Mala Brajkovic, New Zealand Fashion Week, Grey Gardens, Kathleen Turner, Nutjob key rings, Oversized Animal Jewels, Bags shaped like King Tutankhamun, and the music of Meatloaf.
We’re filing this under Fashion and Thrifty. Remember, a $300 romper is good value if you treasure it, wear it, and are complimented like crazy when you rock it.

Sascha and the Distelles
Following the dramatic break-up of Ukulele ensemble the Ha-winos, Sascha, local guitar hero, is once again performing, this time with the Distelles. This Saturday night, he performs at Pablo & Rusty’s. The evening begins at 8pm. At a credit-crunch-friendly $30 a head for dinner and music, bookings are essential. Call 4861 2155 but be quick.
We hope he uses his lucky David Shrigley plectrums for added rock’n'roll nonchalance.
