Book fast for FoodPath’s Winter Tour

alpacas

Jill and Nick at Foodpath tours are finalising a new tour for Winter – A Day in Canyonleigh. This is likely to be in July. Get in touch via the link if you are interested. We expect these spots to go quickly.

Did you know this is an area with a different micro-climate to the rest of the Highlands? It is warmer and drier which is good for growing Shiraz. The Highlands is made up of different micro-climates which they will explore with you.

On the Canyonleigh tour Jill and Nick hope to visit a couple of vineyards, an olive farm and an alpaca farm. There are no cellar doors in this area but the General Store sells all the local wine – so you will have lunch and a wine tasting of the local wines at the Canyonleigh General Store (which SOHI hears has the most incredible burgers in the Highlands!)

Locavore Long Lunch this Sunday

Have you ever heard a friend say ‘I’m a vegetarian at home’ or some other such concession? More often than not good foodie intentions are ruined the minute we step outside the house. Would you have thought you could reduce your food miles by eating in a restaurant? We thought not. But this Sunday, Dave Campbell, chef at Hungry Duck in Berry, continues his long held policy of sourcing locally by hosting a ‘meet the authors’ event. The Locavore Long Lunch, celebrating Amy Willessee and Katie Rivers’ new book (as seen in the current issue of SOHI), gives locals and visitors the chance to sample the best produce from Gerringong to Ulladulla, and to meet some of the producers featured in this wonderful book. There are only a few spaces available. Call Hungry Duck to reserve one of the last spots. 4464 2323.

Drool over this special preview menu for Sunday’s lunch in Dave’s signature style.

The Great Aussie Road Trip in the Highlands

power

SOHI’s favourite foodie business, FoodPath, is kicking off the new year offering a family friendly outing with a difference in conjunction with the Power family and their Great Aussie Road Trip.
Join FoodPath and the Power family from Canberra, a real, regular family who are not celebrities or 4WD experts. They are a family who are passionate about travelling, sharing family friendly experiences that are available in Australia and encouraging other families to do the same.
FoodPath Culinary Tours will team up with the Power family on Saturday January 8, 2011 and take them to visit some of our farms and food producers in the Southern Highlands.
Meet the real free-range chooks at Berrima Ridge, along with the Maremma dogs who act as their guardians. Enjoy a picnic lunch at an award-winning winery, then on to a working dairy to watch the milking and bottle feed some calves.

Green Food Generation collaborates with Hungry Duck, Berry

greenfoodgen

Wow, what a press release! You know at SOHI, we don’t get enough of these pithy engaging press releases. It’s not often we say we couldn’t have written it better ourselves. So we have included all of the press release about Green Food Generation. It’s a subject close to our hearts (broken hearts at the moment with all this rain bursting our cherries!)

“We know it’s good to be green, but is it all just a bunch of self-righteous diatribe, garnished with nut roast and a few lentils? Not so, as Hayden Wood discovers in his new cookbook, titled Green Food Generation – a culinary adventure. Author Hayden Wood (Woody’s Liquid Kitchen, Good Wine, Bad Language Great Vineyards) is an award winning, globetrotting bartender. While his legendary love of all things liquid will never lose its lustre, his travels have led to the discovery of a passion for good food:
Sustainable, free-range, organic, biodynamic, local, ethical – and delicious!
Hayden’s Australia-wide adventure to write this book took him from The Murray to Berry, Fleurieu Peninsula to Perth and Phillip Island: This is not just a cookbook, but a collection of shared stories, thoughts, practical kitchen and gardening tips, as well as recipes that every (even remotely) green-conscious person should know. Featuring chefs, restaurateurs, caterers and food personalities from across Australia including David Campbell (Hungry Duck, Berry), Alex Herbert (Bird, Cow, Fish), Stefano Manfredi (Bells at Killcare), Ben ‘Bender’ O’Donoghue (South Bank Surf Club), Stefano di Pieri (Stefano’s Café Bakery) and OzHarvest’s Ronni Kahn, the book showcases over 200 pages of conscientious consumers and creative cooks, who are as passionate about good food as they are about the planet.
10% of the sale of every book will be contributed to OzHarvest and their expanding food rescue program across Australia. Further information about Hayden Wood and the book can be found on www.woodysliquidkitchen.com. Books are also available from Hungry Duck, Berry.”

School Holiday Godsend

sylvia-first girl

Any parent in the region knows what a struggle it can be to find meaningful things to do with kids on the school holidays. When Jill Dyson of Foodpath Tours told us a few months ago that she had kids activites planned, we couldn’t wait! We’re lucky that most of our children know where food comes from, unlike their city buddies, but this tour takes their food-education another leap forward. Jill has a Foodpath Tour for kids planned for this school holidays. There are lambs to feed (10 at the last count) and pat. You little ones can atch a sheep being milked – something you don’t see every day! The kids can try freshly made sheep’s cheese (we can tell you from our last Foodpath experience that it is excellent), and partake in much silliness like singing songs, and playing games.
Now is the time to book. Jill is expecting places to fill quickly.
