Milk Thieves Art & Design – need to know

cs1

Milk Thieves Art & Design is moving! The only store in central Wollongong that specialises in handmade and independent Australian design is moving to a more spacious store – with window frontage! Moving to shop 9, 157 Crown St; the grand re-opening of Milk Thieves is Tuesday 31st May, from 10am – 6pm. There will be giveaways, free sweet treaties and the first 20 customers to spend $30 or more will get a special Milk Thieves tote bag to carry their purchase.

The new store is easier to find, located just at the top of the stairs of 157 Crown St, in the mall (stairs located next to Flightcentre). The added space will allow Milk Thieves to stock more handmade goods and independently published craft, design and art magazines and zines.  “I’m really excited about the potential the new space has – it means I can extend my product ranges and even give customers lovely warm cups of tea while they’re browsing” store owner Emma-Lee Crane said.

The first feature artist for the store is the talented Caitlin Shearer.. Shearer paints sultry and fashionable ladies – sometimes dressed to the nines, other times lounging in the nude – but always beautiful. Caitlin’s work can be viewed and purchased at Milk Thieves until the end of August (sample images above). Additional work can be viewed at: http://www.caitlinquiet.blogspot.com/

Milk Thieves Art & Design is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am. For current opening hours and regular stock and news updates anybody can follow:

Well Crafted Threats by Tamara Maynes

wcthreats

Resident SOHI craft editor Tamara Maynes has launched a new kit and if you have ever needed a kick up them bum, then this one is for you! It’s called well crafted threats, containing an alphabet of ransom-like letter charts so that you can threaten yourself or loved ones in style. It brings to mind Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher’s Learning to Love You More project which you can see here. If you need some encouragement shouted at you from your wall, you can buy the kit here. The kit is suitable for beginners. But remember our warnings: cross stitch is highly addictive!

Harriet Goodall’s Basket Weaving Workshop

coverharriets

By endless request, Harriet Goodall is sharing her gift with the world (or the world south of Sydney.) Hurrah! Her beautiful milking-shed-cum-workshop was featured on the cover of our second ever issue if you are unfamiliar with Harriet and her wonderful work. And she and her husband Mat were featured in the fashion story in our Spring issue.

Harriet has a few places left in a Random Weaving course on Thursday 24th March 10am – 3pm. Participants will look briefly at the history of basket-making, learn about harvesting and collecting suitable materials from nature and make a sculptural random weave basket. Some materials may also be taken home to continue practice. Places are limited to 10 people so everyone can have individual attention.

Workshops are being held at a beautiful private property “Woollybutt”, Wilde’s Meadow (15 minutes from Bowral, 2 hours from Sydney, 2 hours from Canberra). The cost is $100 for the day and includes notes, materials, tea/coffee and lunch.

Note: Harriet now has a website. For course enquiries, click here.

Get your stitch on!

tamara maynes - cross stitch for storyWell it’s that time of year again, ladies and manbroiderers. The Moss Vale show is coming up and it’s time to get your stitch on. There are some fab entries into the needlework section of the show each year. A highlight for us was the knitted Last Supper in 2009. We’re hoping to get enough younger people to enter this year to make the pool of entries slightly more contemporary. So here are a few resources for beginners with a modern sensibility:

Tamara Maynes. You all know Tami as our craft editor in chief. She sells fab kits with everything you need to complete and frame a project here.

Andwabisabi. The Korean etsy queen of cros stitch charts. Fun food, bite sized projects.

Modern Folk. A manbroiderer with a modern take on folk motifs.

and lastly Atlantic Treefox. Erin’s prints are super lovely and she sidelines in cross stitch. Her charts are some of the simplest and sweetest we have seen. For sale by request. You can see her stitching here and her prints here.

The image above is a one-off work by Tamara Maynes for STORY and is available for purchase here.

Entries into the Moss Vale Show are paper-only and forms are available from the show pavilion at random times on random days. If you’re desperate, message SOHI and we will leave some forms at Exeter General Store for you to collect.
